The iconic journey to the Top of the Rock is undergoing a full transformation—far beyond a refurbishment—designed to deliver a faster, smoother, and more immersive way to enjoy one of Gibraltar’s most famous attractions.
What’s Changing?
The cable car is currently closed for a major two-year reconstruction project. When Gibraltar’s new cable car reopens, the upgrade will be immediately noticeable.
Both the lower and upper stations are being rebuilt from the ground up. The existing three-tower system is being replaced with two modern, streamlined towers designed to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape. Because the summit sits within a protected nature reserve, environmental sensitivity has been prioritised at every stage of the redesign.
Capacity will also increase dramatically. While the previous system transported around 260 people per hour, the new cable car will carry up to 1,150 passengers per hour. Larger cabins—accommodating approximately 80 people each—will reduce queues during peak seasons, allowing visitors to spend more time enjoying the Rock’s natural beauty, wildlife, history, and exceptional views.
Sustainability at the Heart of the Design
Environmental responsibility is central to the new system. Solar panels will contribute to powering the cable car, and the architectural approach aims to minimise visual impact on the protected landscape.
The welfare of Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaques remains a key priority. Improved accessibility also forms part of the upgrades, ensuring that the new stations are welcoming and easy to navigate for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges.
