Summer is over, the kids are back at school and you’re settling back into a working routine. Then, before you have time to notice the passing of time, half-term is just around the corner and you realise you’ve made no plans. Flight and accommodation prices are through the roof, and you find yourself doomed to stay at home with kids climbing the walls, watching the weather grow darker in unison with the evenings.
You won’t find those Autumn blues in Gibraltar though, so why not get ahead of the game and book an October get-away in the sun. Booking ahead in advance not only gives you peace of mind but you’ll almost invariably find better prices across the board during the booking process. The two biggest costs when booking a family trip abroad are the flights and accommodation, but if you’re a savvy traveller, you’ll know that the further ahead you book, the better the deal.
Flights to Gibraltar:
Gibraltar is well connected with the UK, and you’ll find regular direct flights from London, Manchester and Bristol with EasyJet and British Airways. If you’re looking to travel from other UK airports you could consider direct flights to Malaga – just an hour and a half up the coast – with a wider option of carriers, more competition, and possibly bigger discounts.
It’s certainly worth shopping around to book your flights and if you look early enough you might be surprised by some great offers flying direct to the Rock.
Accommodation in Gibraltar:
When you travel with children you may find it useful to have a little autonomy in your accommodation. Our well-equipped one bed apartments with a double bed in the bedroom and small double sofa bed in the living room are perfect for a family. Located in the modern and central building of WestOne, the apartments offer you the flexibility to keep some of them all-important routines such as mealtimes, whilst still only being a few minutes’ walk away from the city centre and many of the main tourist attractions on offer. We have some great offers for booking in advance including a special October offer on 1 bed apartments where kids under 11 go free!
So, once you’ve reached the Rock, what to do with the kids?
Local Activities
Just around the corner from the WestOne Holiday Apartments you’ll find King’s Bastion, with a Bowling alley, Boulder Park, and Cinema complex. It’s a great opportunity to join in the activities with the younger ones or leave them to it while you head off to Main Street, Gibraltar’s central shopping street where you can take advantage of great duty-free purchases, usually cheaper than you’ll find on your flight.
Upper Rock Nature Reserve
A visit to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is not to be missed. Take the cable car, coach tour, taxi tour or, if you’re feeling energetic, walk up with the family to really tire the kids out. Take in the incredible views of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Moorish Castle, see the apes and once at the top take in the breath-taking views of the Mediterranean to the East. Visit St. Michael’s Cave and the WWII tunnels and dive into ancient and modern history of the Rock.
Europa Point
Back down closer to sea level, you’ll find the Europa Point Lighthouse on the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, with views south to Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where on a clear day you can see the Atlas mountain range in the distance. To the west you’ll see the most southern tip of Europe, the Spanish town of Tarifa and a destination to put on your day-trip list with the family.
Dolphin Trips
Alternatively, call in to one of the Marinas and book a dolphin trip into the bay. Finding dolphins is just about guaranteed and depending on the time of year and temperatures you may be lucky enough to see some other interesting sea creatures such as flying fish, whales on rare occasions, sea turtles and much more.
Day Trips
Day trips from Gibraltar are a great opportunity to visit southern Andalusia or even Morocco. For the kids, a trip up the Costa Del Sol to the Selwo wildlife park or to the Sealife centre in Benalmadena are just a couple of the options out there to make it a special day for the younger members of the family.
So what are you waiting for?
We’ve an amazing offer* for October where children under 11 go free with two adults, plus a further 5% discount on your stay! Think ahead and book your family break with Bentley Holiday Apartments. Take advantage of early booking and get away from the autumn cold. It only takes a couple of hours to get here from the UK, but the memories you’ll make will last forever!
