Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
About an hour and a half from Gibraltar, Jerez de la Frontera is a city steeped in Andalusian culture. Known for sherry, horse breeding and flamenco. Visit one of the city’s many sherry bodegas, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, or attend a live flamenco show. Jerez is also home to the Alcázar, a well-preserved Moorish castle well worth exploring.
Tarifa, Spain
If you are a fan of wind and water sports, Tarifa should be on your list. Just over an hour from Gibraltar, this coastal town is Europe’s windsurfing and kitesurfing capital, thanks to its strong winds. And if you’re into adrenaline sports, you’ll find a great range of sports climbing routes mapped out just past the Bolonia Beach by the small village of Betis with incredible views down over the sand beaches with Tarifa and Morocco in the distance. In contrast, Tarifa’s beautiful beaches and clear blue waters are also ideal for a relaxing day in the sun. Less than two hours from Gibraltar, Malaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, has a variety of cultural and historical attractions. Visit the Picasso museum, explore the stunning Malaga Cathedral and wander the well-preserved Moorish Alcazaba.
